A Journey Through Naxos’ History and Nature
The hike begins in Apiranthos, a stunning village that is amphitheatrically nestled on the slopes of Mount Fanari, standing 650 meters above sea level. Renowned for its unique architecture, Apiranthos is often referred to, as the “Marble Village” due to the abundant use of local marble in its buildings. The village boasts stone-built towers, ancient houses, and Marble-paved pathways, A photographer’s paradise.
Leaving Apiranthos behind, the path steadily leads toward the Fotodotis Monastery, a remarkable 15th-century Byzantine structure. With its towering stone walls and commanding bell tower, the monastery gives a fortress-like presence , standing proudly against the rugged Naxian landscape. Dedicated to the Virgin Mary, it holds profound religious significance for the people of Naxos, offering a peaceful atmosphere yet strong feel of the island’s rich spiritual and cultural heritage. From the monastery, the hike takes you along a time-worn path that descends toward the traditional village of Danakos, a peaceful, non-touristic village with a calm, serene atmosphere. Here, you’ll find numerous ancient plane trees, their vast canopies providing shade over a natural spring that flows from the mountains nearby.
The final leg of the journey takes you through the island’s lush agricultural heartland. As you leave Danakos, the trail gradually begins to ascend weaving through a picturesque patchwork of small farms vibrant greenery of olive groves, lemon/orange orchards, vineyards and terraced fields.
